Fly Fishing Reels: The Key To A Great Fly Fishing Experience

When one decides to spend the day fishing, it is a good assumption that the person is looking to make a good catch. However, in order to insure that the fishing experience is an enjoyable one, the proper rod must be purchased. A proper fly fishing rod is only as good as the fly fishing reel that is attached to it.

What Is A Fly Fishing Reel And How Does it Work?

A fly fishing reel is used for the deployment (when looking to catch the fish) and eventual retrieval (once the fish is thought to be caught) of fishing line. The fishing line itself is wound around a spool, which is in turn mounted on the fishing rod.

Fly fishing reels are also referred to as fly casting reels. The key to fly fishing reels is how they drag, meaning how they stand up to the fight a fish puts up once it is caught. The drags on fly fishing reels are still a work in progress, since some are fine for smaller fish but not strong enough for larger fish, while the drags that are meant for larger fish tend to allow the smaller fish to wiggle out of them.

Fly fishing reels work usual by manually turning a handle which is attached to the side of the reel. The handle then makes the spool move, which in turn moves the fishing line itself. At one time, a faster manual method of fly fishing reel was introduced to the fishing market. These multiplier fly reels were very complicated to use, however, so they are rather rare today.

Automatic fly fishing reels were introduced as an alternative to having to go through the strain of manually cranking the reel. While automatic reels were popular in the 1960s, they were rather heavy and difficult to maneuver, so the manual fly fishing reels ultimately took precedence.

Fly fishing reels can be found at a local sports department store, or they can also be found online via many different websites. Although they are generally already attached to the fly fishing rod, the prices of individual reels vary depending on the brand and the size. When looking for a reel, make sure it is solid and easily manipulated; because a reel that is a good fit leads to a great fly fishing experience.
